The Judeo Christian Foundations of America
Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 3:45PM Right wingers love to claim that the United States is a "Christian Nation" and that it was founded on Judeo-Christian values. Just because our Founding Fathers were Christians, or Deists (call them you want), it did not mean they created a "Christian Nation" or a nation founded on Judeo-Christian values.
If the Founders created a "Christian Nation" then why does the First Amendment explicitely prevent the establishment of any religion. What more evidence do you need? It is so clear. They are lying, plain and simple.
As for a nation founded on Judeo-Christian values, I challenge someone to tell me what these values are. You can say that this nation was founded on Judeo-Christian values until you are blue in the face, but that does not make it so. Did Separation of Powers come from the Bible? Did a bicameral legislature come from the Bible? Did enumerated federal powers come from the Bible? Did the idea of Checks and Balances come from the Bible? Did the creation of a Republic come from the Bible? Did due process of the law come from the Bible? Maybe Moses was hiding a third tablet behind his back that these people are privy to?
When forming our nation, the Founders looked to ancient Greece and Rome (which predate Christianity), Montesquieu, Locke, Hume and other great thinkers. They did not look to Jesus or Moses or anyone else from the Bible. Come on let's be serious. Still, I can be an open minded person. If anyone can tell me what Judeo-Christian values went into the founding of the United States or how we are a "Christian Nation" (a definition of a "Christian Nation" may be helpful) please let me know. Just don't give me a conclusatory statements to that effect.
